Introduction

Founded in 1950, Tai Thong Cake Shop (大同饼家) specialises in traditional Cantonese-style pastries made by hand daily from regionally-sourced raw ingredients. A home-grown business in continuous operation over the past 70 years, Tai Thong Cake Shop preserves a piece of yesteryear culture and has become an iconic destination in Singapore’s historic Chinatown.

Trained as a pastry chef in Hong Kong in the late 1930s, founder Mr. Kwok Khim Wai (郭金维) settled in Singapore and in 1950, fulfilled his dream of opening his very own traditional Cantonese cake shop. Khim Wai envisioned his store as a place where everybody could come together to enjoy a treat. Hence, a simple name was created for the bakery: 大同饼家 Tai Thong Cake Shop, loosely signifying “everyone agrees”. The name was also memorable and easily identifiable, as many of the customers at the time were illiterate.

Tai Thong Cake Shop has since passed down to second-generation members of the Kwok family. Together with a team of experienced staff, each pastry is still lovingly hand-crafted from scratch at the premises, following the traditional artisanal techniques as taught by Khim Wai, to maintain the fine mouthfeel that is unattainable by modern machinery.
